One of the most famous Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner, was born on the 2nd of April 1914 in Tønder, a town in southern Denmark. To celebrate this great man and his extraordinary input in Danish Design, each year Carl Hansen & Son introduces a limited edition of one of his most recognizable works – the iconic CH24, known as a Wishbone Chair. This year’s edition, celebrating the 106th birthday anniversary of Hans Wegner comes in a beautiful, deep glossy navy blue color.
CH24’s striking new color was carefully selected in close collaboration with the London-based designer Ilse Crawford, the creative director of Studioilse. The deep, moody shade of navy and the high-gloss finish were inspired by Wegner’s long-standing fascination with the Asian design history and craft.

This beautiful chair has been in constant production since 1950 so this year we are also celebrating its 70th years anniversary. When designing the CH24, Wegner chose to combine the back- and armrest into a single piece. To give stability to the steam-bent top and ensure comfortable support, the Hans J. Wegner developed the characteristic Y-shaped back that the Wishbone Chair is named after. Danish people most often call it “Y-stolen” which simply means “the Y-chair”. It takes more than 100 steps to manufacture each chair, most of which are carried out by hand. The production takes place in Denmark, in Carl Hansen & Son’s factory on the island of Funen. The hand-woven seat takes a skilled craftsman about an hour to create and requires approximately 120 meters of paper cord. Each chair is assembled from 14 different elements, made with the closest attention to every detail. It’s no exaggeration to say that every chair is a piece of art and the quintessence of Danish modernism. As you can imagine, this amazing, glossy, deep blue limited birthday edition is no exception.

Duńczycy najczęściej mówią o nim “Y-stolen”, co oznacza po prostu „krzesło Y”. Proces produkcji każdego krzesła składa się z ponad 100 kroków i w większości odbywa się ręcznie. Krzesła powstają w Danii, w fabryce Carl Hansen & Son na wyspie Fionia. Wykonanie siedziska z plecionki zajmuje wykwalifikowanemu rzemieślnikowi około godziny i wymaga 120 metrów specjalnego papierowego sznurka. Każde krzesło składa się z 14 osobnych elementów, wykonanych z największą dbałością o każdy szczegół. Można śmiało powiedzieć, że CH24 to dzieło sztuki i kwintesencja duńskiego modernizmu. Tegoroczna limitowana edycja urodzinowa nie jest wyjątkiem.

It is worth noticing that each limited-edition chair features a small brass plate engraved with Hans J. Wegner’s signature and date of birth, discretely placed inside the chair’s frame. Every chair is also accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
